Who Does Every Look from Marie Antoinette to Zelda Fitzgerald? OMG Does, That’s Who

“Special occasion” to us at OMG means anything from your–or your daughter’s–bat mitzvah to an elaborate costume party gala. Nobody is more experienced, or as perfectionistic, about special occasion hair and makeup than OMG.

12935_167370782452_6742578_nMaurice says: “We do contemporary glamour like nobody’s business. Christina, OMG’s makeup artist, is a genius, and she’s also an amazing listener who fully absorbs what her clients are requesting while internally, she’s also considering the color and shape of outfit for the special event, shape of our client’s face, her personality–everything.

“All our stylists work together with our client and Christina so that the overall look is a cohesive masterpiece–carefully designed so that all elements complement each other.

If an event calls for a very specialized look, however, I’ll handle almost all these appointments myself because special techniques are required that most stylists just don’t know how to do unless they’ve been working for as long as I have or have a background in the entertainment industry. Luckily, I have both!

“For example, we can do period make-up and hair–meaning, historically accurate. I once did a Marie Antoinette for a costume event–the elaborate 18th-Century hair and make-up–the whole portrait! She looked fabulous!

mary_q

“I can also do all kinds of retro hair-styles–that 1960s Mary Quant look, for example, or a 1920’s Louise Brooks bob–and the makeup that is designed to go with the look.

OMG Salon Has Just Sweetened Valentine’s Day with a Luscious Boxed Treat!

We’ve sweetened the deal…

You already know about our sweethearts’ Valentine’s Day special, but OMG has just selected an amazing, luscious, pure line of shampoos, conditioners, and more: Onestà. And we’re offering a gorgeous, red Valentine’s Day boxed set of Onestà shampoo, conditioner, and style aid–PLUS a $110 OMG gift certificate!–all for just $125. (NOTE: The actual value is $170.)

Here’s why Maurice believes Onestà is so special.

onesta

We don’t have to tell you again, but we’ll tell you again anyway: Maurice–he did it again!–is compulsive about finding the best hair products for OMG Salon. You know why because you’ve heard him say it time and time again: “We can give you the most gorgeous cut in the world, but if you go home and use terrible products–or fry your hair with a bad drier–it essentially cancels out the cut!” That’s why he’s so excited about Onestà.

The Onestà line has deep integrity, certainly in terms of performance, but also for its scientific commitment to your hair and health. Onestà products are made exclusively from naturally-derived ingredients. All the ingredients for which most companies use often toxic chemicalssurfactants, preservatives, dyes–are, in Onestà’s products, 100% natural. The surfactants (the ingredient that makes shampoos and conditioners “slippery”) are derived from coconut oil; the preservative is sage oil. Hair-care product dyes are almost all carcinogenic–not Onestà’s, which are botanically derived.

Most importantly, Onestà’s formulas are based on Omega EFA complexes to strengthen your hair, from root to core. At the root, Onestà’s Omega 3 & 6 EFA complex delivers a burst of nutrients to the very root of the hair–the scalp and pores. At the core, the Omega formulation helps reinforce and restructure damaged hair fibers, strengthening the hair. And on the surface, its Omega EFA Complex replaces emollients lost due to UV exposure, chemical processing, and the effects of styling products on the hair surface. It also smoothes and protects the hair’s outer layer, leaving it healthier and full of shine.

Maurice says: “Valentine’s Day is all about love and beauty, so give the gift of Onestà’s pure hair products (not to mention the $110 OMG gift certificate). It’s the sweetest deal in town!”

Love, Need, and Want You Baby! Maurice and the Family Go to Ms. Patti LaBelle’s Holiday Gala!

maurice_cartoon“John, our daughter–Hana–and I were invited to the fabulous Patti LaBelle’s annual holiday gala at her home in Wynnewood. I used to do Patti’s hair and natural-feeling wigs back in the early 90s, when I was still working out of my studio in New York, so it had been years since I’d seen her.

“The main party was in Patti’s indoor pool house, all lavishly decorated with Christmas garlands, trees, ornaments–so festive and fun!

johnandmaurice“John and I had so much fun, drinking pool-side (that’s me on the right, obviously, wearing velvet Etro pants). We had a blast chatting with Patti’s lovely guests. Everyone was wonderful and warm and inviting!

pattiandthepres“On display was a picture of President Obama and Patti, along with the White House’s special holiday card, inscribed by all the family–even the dogs! And the food! Fried chicken, collard greens and mac and cheese and cat-fish–the best.

mauricehannapatti“Even though I hadn’t seen her in years, Patti hasn’t changed a bit. She’s gorgeous, and really, she’s the most genuine, real, warm person.

“Patti used to sing for me while she was sitting in my chair, while I worked on her hair. You can be imagine what it is like to be personally serenaded by Patti. We had a group picture with Patti, my daughter, and I.

patti_singing“There was a group sing around the piano–but Patti, of course, was the star. All her backup singers were there and backing her up. Leon Huff played the piano! She sang ‘Love, Need, Want You.’ She not only still has it, she’s only gotten better.

patticostume“Look at what I found! The costume Patti wore the first time I ever saw her in concert, in Philly! I’m not telling you when that was.

“Patti also just found a new talent, Amber, a little girl with a massive, astonishing voice. She sang Adele’s ‘Rolling in the Deep,’ and we were all cheering and clapping her on–unbelievable!

“It really was the best party ever! We’re so honored to have been included in Patti’s wonderful, warm gala. It’s what every party should be: brimming with delicious food, genuine laughter, singing, and warmth like you wouldn’t believe.

“Warmest holidays and New Year, beloved OMG clients and friends!”

Get the Gift You *Should* Have: Maurice Has Just the Thing–and a Special to Go With It!

12935_167370782452_6742578_nWith the holiday season in full swing–and Hanukkah already past–OMG Salon Buzz! had a little sit down (catch him if you can, ladies and gents–our Maurice is the busiest bee in town this time of year!) for a Q&A with founder and owner, Maurice Tannenbaum,  to find out what gift Maurice thinks makes the biggest difference, for anyone’s look–for the holidays, New Year’s, and generally speaking, when life strikes.

Read to the end for OMG Salon’s special on the service–now you don’t have any reason not to invest in a fabulous new look and a whole new lease on life!

Q: What’s the service that will give clients the biggest bang for their look this time of year?

A: The biggest bang comes from whatever is going to make our clients feel beautiful, transformed–fantastic about herself. It’s true at any time of year, but the holidays are the perfect time to make a big change–think of it as making a New Year’s resolution that’s going to make a lasting change toward self-improvement and self-esteem.

Q: So, you’re recommending Yungian therapy? Vitamin-B shots? Chucking all the wall-to-wall carpeting in your home?

A: No, no, no! I’m talking about hair extensions! Hair extensions change people’s lives. It makes them feel whole again, more accepted, confident. Getting hair extensions is a transforming experience.

Q: Thank God–we hate needles. But hair extensions–what if looking like Beyonce isn’t your thing?

A: That’s a very limited view of what hair extensions can do! It’s true, extensions can be used for lengthening hair, but also during the aging process, we lose volume due to hair loss. Thick hair translates to a younger appearance–which translates to a new look on life.

Q: How do you style with them–and what do you like about them?

A: Hair extensions can be used on the sides of the head to add volume. They can be used to frame the face. We can take away bangs. Extensions are an added tool to our profession, they create shapes you can’t do without them—more volume, more layers, fewer layers—greater ability to make changes. Hair restoration one of the most rewarding things we do.

Victoria_beforeWe use Balmain Paris, and they’ve been in the hair business for almost 50 years. We use all best-quality human hair—comes in lengths of 10-, 16-, and 22-inches. A full head can be applied in an hour and a half unlike other products that can take six to eight hours to apply which makes them less money because there is less labor. We can custom cut them. We can do color matching. Balmain has 18 colors, and within that range we can find a match. But we can also blend different colors together–plus, they’re dyeable. Many times, we won’t highlight the clients hair; instead we’ll use extensions, this way the client doesn’t need to bleach her own hair.

Victoria_after

Q: What are some special cases in which you use hair extensions?

A: Post Chemo, when your hair is four to six inches long we can give you extensions to give you back your length.

Sary says: It wasn’t a glam-gal who reached vaunted Salon Buzz Superstar status this week, but little Dewey Burch (as in Tory’s nephew!). We take care of the whole Burch family: five children and parents, Robert and Susan, they are a great family. Dewey_1

Now, when we say little, we’re talking preschooler, and when this adorable little boy walks through the door, we all die of cuteness!

Dewey_4Dewey_2It was a rainy day, when William Dewittt Burch–“Dewey”–clomped into OMG wearing his fire-fighter’s costume and promptly removed his boots.

Because I love Dewey, I always keep a bag of lollipops for him at my chair, he always looks forward to his cut and a kiss from Sary.

I’m very flattered to have been told that Dewey loves me, too!

Maurice’s Meticulous Notes on What’s Fabulous at OMG–and Beyond

12935_167370782452_6742578_nIt’s our fourth edition of OMG Salon’s “Salon Buzz,” our little inside looksie on what’s fabulous here and beyond, as well as showcasing a before-and-after of one of our clients in each issue.

This week, OMG’s own Bekah stumbled on the possibility for tremendous transformation right in her own backyard–meaning, with her mom, hairdresser Sharon Martin!

Bekah says: So my mom and I were at a football party Sunday, talking about hair, naturally, And she said that she was ready for a change. After looking at about a million hair pictures we decided to chop it off. That was Sunday and she had an appointment by first thing Tuesday. My mom is a hair stylist also so it’s hard for her to lose the control when it comes to her hair but this time she left it up to me…bekka1

Meet Our Senior Stylist, Bekah!

Senior Stylist, Bekah!

Maurice says: She is a stylist in Lancaster, Pa, so the look she had was dated. She never even thought about how she looked–she only worried about what her clients looked like. I overheard the entire conversation as I was next to both of them when her mom said”I’ll leave it up to you.” Her old look was dated and Bekah suggested that she have a look like a movie star.

Bekkah says:  Now she looks like Sienna Miller.

Maurice says: Right, Sienna Miller. Her mom had already cut her own bangs the day before, so Bekah was stuck with bangs that were shorter then she would have liked–but that was the concept!bekka2

Bekah: Sienna Miller was was the look we were going for, she cut her bangs the week before so we couldn’t get it exactly like Sienna, but that was the concept and as soon as her bangs grew a little, we would cut it again. She also said she wanted more blonde. So this is what we did:

bekka_makeover_1

bekka_makeover_2

Bekah: My mom liked her hair long because it was easy–she could just pull it back. But she does this every few years: Lets her hair grow and then cuts it all off. But this was the first time she came into my salon and let me do it.

Maurice says: It’s a complete transformation: sophisticated, youthful, full of energy and swing. Bekah should be very proud–and so is her mother! Congratulations mother and daughter: You’re both this week’s Salon Buzz Superstars!
